Cerebral palsy affects people in different ways and can affect body movement, muscle control, muscle coordination, muscle tone, reflex, posture, and balance.

As the world marks Cerebral Palsy Day today, October 6, here are some facts to know about the disorder.

1. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of disorders that affect a person’s ability to move and maintain balance and posture.

2. Every hour a baby is born with cerebral palsy (CP).

3. It is the most common physical disability in childhood.

4. Cerebral palsy is a life-long physical disability due to damage to the developing brain.

5. In most cases, brain injury leading to cerebral palsy occurs during pregnancy.


6. CP is more common among boys than girls, and more common among black children than among white children.

7. Symptoms of CP vary from person to person.

8. Over half (about 50%-60%) of children with CP can walk independently.

9. Many children with CP have one or more additional conditions or diseases along with their CP, known as co-occurring conditions. For example, about 4 in 10 children with CP also have epilepsy and about 1 in 10 have autism spectrum disorder.

10. There is no single cause of cerebral palsy however factors like premature birth, been conceived via IVF, infection of the mother and having complications during birth may increase the risk of cerebral palsy.

11. There is no known cure.
